The Kamisori of the Samurai
The Japanese razor design that transcended centuries, remaining a masterpiece to this day. Only a handful of blacksmiths still make it.
One of them is Mr Mizuochi of Iwasaki Razors. His workshop is 50 meters away from Suwada's factory, and he frequently visits Suwada for a cup of coffee in his lunch break.
He uses Swedish Sandvik Steel, as it is similar but more approachable than the much more traditional ''Tamahagane''. It is fused by heat and a lot of hammering on a much softer steel that makes up the body and handle. Every process for a Japanese razor takes place in his small workshop, where he keeps the lights off during work so that he can see the colour of the metal.
Every Japanese razor is meticulously made by hand.
This is one of the most simple, minimalist items that are still produced in Tsubame-Sanjo. The laborious process of a Japanese razor is often the reason why larger companies avoid making them, but for Mr Mizuochi, it's a continuation of an important craft that has deep roots in the culture. His apprentice is there every day for over 10 years, learning the craft and slowly helping his master meet up the demand his razors have, as many young men turn to a more traditional ritual for their personal care.
The Japanese razor is honed and polished on natural stones, which to the people who understand how much time and focus this takes, is incredible.
