Does an SLD Knife Need Oil?

An SLD kitchen knife usually does not need oil for normal daily use if it is washed and dried carefully. Oil becomes more useful during long storage or in very humid conditions.

Why not every day?

SLD has substantially better corrosion resistance than simple reactive carbon steel, so normal cleaning and prompt drying are generally enough.

When is oil helpful?

Use a very thin layer of food-safe protective oil if the knife will be stored for weeks or months, if humidity is high or if you have previously seen spotting during storage.

What oil should you use?

Use a neutral food-safe oil intended for knife or food-contact maintenance. Avoid cooking oils that can oxidise and become sticky or rancid during storage.

Do you oil the handle too?

Only if the handle material needs it. Blade oil and wooden-handle care are separate questions.

What matters more than oil?

Clean the blade, dry it fully and store it somewhere dry. Oil cannot compensate for trapping moisture against the steel.

When Does a Japanese Knife Need Professional Repair?

Professional repair is worth considering for deep chips, broken tips, major thinning, distorted single-bevel geometry, deep rust, loose handles or damage that would require heavy material removal.

Can You Fix a Broken Japanese Knife Tip?

Often yes. A small broken tip can usually be reshaped by grinding the spine and edge into a new point, but larger breaks remove more steel and can change blade profile, balance and usefulness.
