Take a trip back to cast bronze artefacts

A Japanese Custom Art by a Japanese bronze casting technique of Seiun Souemon Hara.

It was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property in 1978, and is still being practiced today in Niigata.
The beautiful speckled purplish red patterns - so called “Hanshidou”, are created through a series of processes using quality coal fire to bring out the beauty of the material iteself.

The bronze is cast in a mould and once out it is left to cool. Then the artisan places the object in coal fire and waits. Right before the bronze is about to melt it is pulled from the coal fire and left to cool.

This creates intricate patterns that are impossible to replicate.

Not a single pattern is the same. Each piece has its own beauty which improves over time as if it had a life of its own.
