How to Clean Nail Clippers and Nail Nippers

Clean nail clippers and nail nippers by removing visible debris first, then washing or wiping the tool as appropriate for its material, disinfecting when needed, and drying it completely before storage. The important sequence is simple: clean first, disinfect second, dry thoroughly last.
Do not assume that every premium steel, coating, spring or handle material tolerates the same chemicals. Follow the tool maker's care instructions when they are available.
Step 1: Remove visible nail debris
Disinfectants work poorly on a dirty surface. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends first removing nail clippings and other fragments from the tool.
Use a soft brush, cloth or other non-damaging method that reaches the cutting head without bending the edges. Avoid scraping precision blades with another hard metal object.
Step 2: Wash the tool
AAD guidance for ordinary nail clippers recommends washing with warm water and soap before disinfection. Rinse away loosened debris and soap residue afterwards.
For a premium tool, especially one made from high-carbon stainless or carbon steel, avoid leaving it wet longer than necessary. Step 4: Dry completely
This step matters both for hygiene and corrosion. AAD guidance specifically says to let clippers dry completely before storing them. Moisture left around a pivot, spring, joint or blade contact area can encourage corrosion and trap residue.
Do not close a damp tool inside a case.
