How Do You Use a Chestnut Peeler?

To use a two-blade chestnut peeler, hold the chestnut securely and work gradually around the shell: one blade grips the shell while the other cuts it away in small sections. The SUWADA Chestnut Peeler is designed specifically around this grip-and-cut action.

How does the SUWADA chestnut peeler work?

The tool has two blades with different jobs. The gripping blade holds the chestnut shell or skin in place while the cutting blade removes it incrementally. This is different from sliding a standard vegetable peeler across a flat surface.

How to use it

  1. Hold the chestnut securely in your non-tool hand.
  2. Position the peeler so one blade can grip the shell.
  3. Squeeze in a controlled way so the cutting blade removes a small section.
  4. Rotate the chestnut and repeat around the shell.
  5. Work gradually rather than trying to remove the entire shell in one movement.

Does it take practice?

Yes. The current SUWADA product guidance notes a short learning curve. After a few chestnuts, the grip-and-cut motion becomes more natural.

Why use a dedicated chestnut peeler?

Chestnuts have a hard outer shell and a thinner inner skin. A dedicated tool gives you a controlled two-blade mechanism rather than asking a general kitchen knife to do the same job.

Can the blades be replaced?

Yes. The SUWADA model uses replaceable blades.

Wa Handle vs Western Handle on Japanese Knives

Wa handles are typically lighter and more blade-forward; Western handles are usually heavier and familiar. Neither is universally better.
