For a curved toenail, do not follow the curve by cutting deeply down the sides. Routine podiatry guidance is to trim the nail straight across, leave the corners visible, and smooth any sharp points with a file.
A naturally curved nail is not automatically an ingrown nail. But once the edge is painful, inflamed or growing into the surrounding skin, home trimming becomes a different problem.
Why not cut down the sides?
