Petty vs Utility Knife: What Is the Difference?

Petty and utility knives overlap so much that the difference is often one of naming and design tradition rather than a strict technical boundary.

What is a petty?

Petty is the common Japanese category for small general-purpose knives. It can range from paring size to longer 120–150 mm board-oriented blades.

What is a utility knife?

Utility knife is a broader Western kitchen term for a blade that sits between a paring knife and a chef’s knife. Lengths and profiles vary widely.

Where do they overlap?

A 120–150 mm petty and a similarly sized utility knife can perform almost identical jobs: fruit, small vegetables, sandwiches, herbs and trimming.

Geometry can differ

Many Japanese petty knives are relatively thin and light, while some Western utility knives are thicker or more flexible. But this is not a fixed rule.

Which term matters when buying?

Look at the actual length, blade height, thickness, point and edge profile rather than relying on the label alone.

Which should you choose?

Choose the knife whose dimensions fit your tasks. If you want in-hand work, stay short. If you want more board work, 120–150 mm is usually more useful.
