Why Is My Wooden Knife Handle Splitting?

A wooden knife handle usually splits because the wood has been stressed by moisture change, heat, impact or movement around the tang.

Japanese kitchen knife manufacturing process

Repeated wet and dry cycles

Wood absorbs and releases moisture. Repeated soaking followed by drying can make it swell and shrink, building stress along the grain or around fittings.

Dishwasher heat

Long exposure to hot water, detergent and forced drying is especially hard on natural wood and joints.

Very dry environments

Strong indoor heating or direct heat can pull moisture from wood quickly and encourage checking or gaps.

Impact or leverage

Drops and heavy twisting can start a crack mechanically, especially near the ferrule, pins or tang opening.

What should you do first?

Stop soaking or heating the handle, let it dry naturally and inspect whether the crack is stable or growing.

Should you fill it with oil or household glue?

Not as a first response. Oil is maintenance, not structural repair, and an unsuitable adhesive can make later repair harder.

When should you stop using the knife?

If the handle moves, the crack is widening, the tang is exposed or the grip no longer feels secure, stop using it until repaired.
