How Hard Is VG10 to Sharpen at Home?
Sep 27, 2026
VG10 is very manageable to sharpen at home. It is a hard stainless cutlery steel, so removing metal can feel slower than on some simple carbon steels, but it responds well to ordinary water stones and careful technique.

Is VG10 difficult to sharpen?
Not especially. A dull or damaged edge may take time, but routine maintenance is straightforward if the stone is suitable and the angle stays consistent.
What makes it feel slower?
Wear resistance and hardness can make abrasion slower than on simpler steels. That does not mean the steel cannot take a fine edge.
What stone should you use?
A medium water stone around 1000 grit is a practical starting point for normal sharpening. Coarser stones are useful for damage or major thinning; finer stones refine the edge afterward.
Do you need diamond stones?
No. Diamond plates can work well, but they are not required for ordinary VG10 maintenance.
How much pressure?
Use moderate pressure while shaping the edge, then reduce pressure as you approach the finish. Heavy pressure at the end can leave a stubborn burr.
What matters most?
Follow the existing bevel, keep the stone flat and deburr carefully. The exact knife geometry matters more than chasing a universal angle.
