What Is Micarta?

Micarta is a family of laminated thermoset composite materials made by combining a resin system with layers of reinforcement, then curing the material into a hard, stable sheet or shape. Depending on the grade, the reinforcement can include paper, linen, canvas or other fibres.
For knife handles, Micarta is valued because it can be tough, durable and precisely machined while still offering a visible layered texture. SUWADA currently uses Micarta handles on three Masterpiece folding knives.
What is Micarta made of?
Norplex-Micarta describes its materials as thermoset composites produced by impregnating a reinforcement with resin and then laminating and curing the material. For consumer products, the company specifically produces paper, linen and canvas Micarta grades.
That does not mean every Micarta handle uses the same reinforcement or resin. SUWADA does not currently publish the exact Micarta grade used for its folding-knife handles, so this article does not guess at the internal fabric or resin system.
Is Micarta plastic?
It is more accurate to call Micarta a thermoset composite laminate than a simple plastic sheet. The material combines a cured resin matrix with reinforcement layers.
Why is Micarta used for knife handles?
Micarta can be machined into precise shapes and is widely used in consumer products where durability and appearance both matter. Norplex-Micarta specifically lists knife-handle material among its consumer applications.
On the SUWADA Masterpiece folding knives, Micarta creates a cleaner, more graphic appearance than the natural-wood models while retaining the same compact blade format.
Does Micarta need oil?
SUWADA does not currently specify routine oiling for its Micarta folding-knife handles. For these models, the documented care is simpler: keep the knife clean and dry and do not put it in a dishwasher.
Because different composite grades and finishes exist, it is better to follow the maker's care instructions than to apply a treatment simply because another Micarta product recommends it.
Can Micarta get wet?
A small amount of incidental moisture is different from leaving a folding knife wet. If the knife gets damp, wipe it clean and dry it thoroughly before storage.

Micarta or wood for a folding-knife handle?
There is no single better material. Micarta offers a more uniform, contemporary look, while natural wood varies in grain and tone from one knife to another. The SUWADA Damascus model is different again, using a forged layered-steel handle.
