Can a Nakiri Cut Meat?

Yes. A sharp nakiri can cut boneless meat, but that is not what the shape is primarily designed for. It works best as a vegetable knife.

What meat can it handle?

A nakiri can portion boneless chicken breast, slice cooked meat, cut thin strips and handle other soft boneless foods on a cutting board.

What makes it less versatile for meat?

The broad rectangular blade has little or no pointed tip. That makes detailed trimming around joints, fat and connective tissue less convenient than with a gyuto or petty.

Can it cut through bones?

No. A nakiri is not a cleaver. Thin hard edges can chip if they strike substantial bones, frozen meat or other very hard material.

What about cartilage?

Soft cartilage may be possible, but do not force the knife when resistance becomes hard and rigid. If the task requires impact or levering, change tools.

When is a nakiri enough?

If your meat preparation mainly means portioning already-boneless ingredients, the nakiri can do the job. If you regularly trim meat or work around joints, a pointed all-purpose knife is more convenient.
