Petty vs Paring Knife: Size, Board Work & Peeling

A Petty is usually longer and more board-friendly; a paring knife is shorter and better for peeling and close hand control. If you want one compact knife that can still slice comfortably on a board, choose Petty. If you mainly peel, core and trim in the hand, choose a paring knife.

Petty vs paring at a glance

Feature Petty Paring
Typical length 120–150 mm 80–100 mm
Best environment Board work Hand work and tiny tasks
Strong uses Fruit, garlic, small slicing, trimming Peeling, coring, blemishes, fine trimming
As second knife Broader small-knife role More specialised close control

Which is better for board work?

Petty. Its extra length makes it more comfortable for slicing fruit, garlic, shallots and small vegetables on a board.

Which is better for peeling?

Paring. The shorter blade is easier to control close to the hand for peeling, coring and removing blemishes.

Which is better for meat trimming?

Petty usually offers more useful reach for small boneless meat trimming. Neither is intended for heavy bone.

Do you need both?

No. Many kitchens can choose one based on the tasks they actually perform. If you already own a chef’s knife, Santoku or Gyuto, Petty often adds the broader second-knife capability.

What should you buy?

  • Choose Petty for board work, fruit, small slicing and trimming.
  • Choose Paring for peeling, coring and close work in the hand.
