Can You Skip 3000 Grit and Go Straight to 6000?
Sep 27, 2026
Yes. You can skip 3000 grit and move directly to 6000 if the edge is already fully formed. Whetstone progressions are tools, not mandatory recipes.

What must be finished before moving finer?
The apex should already be established and major burr work should be under control before you rely on a fine finishing stone.
What does 3000 grit add?
It acts as an intermediate refinement step, reducing the depth of scratches from the medium stone before the final polish.
What happens if you skip it?
A 6000-grit stone can still refine the edge, but it may take longer to erase or soften the coarser scratch pattern.
Do you need 6000 grit at all?
No. A clean medium-grit edge can already be excellent for general kitchen use.
When is the jump reasonable?
When the medium-stone finish is already clean, you want a more refined edge and your fine stone cuts effectively enough for the steel.
When is 3000 useful?
When you want a quicker, more controlled transition between medium sharpening and high refinement.
