Five hand-coloured brass rests made to be handled
This set brings together five finishes of Orii's long brass cutlery rest: blue, black, white, yellow-gold and copper pink. The colour is not conventional paint. Orii develops colour on the metal surface itself, using controlled reactions, heat and hand finishing in Takaoka, Japan.
How it feels
- Long and slim: each rest is about 10 cm long, so it can support two or three pieces of cutlery.
- Cool brass in the hand: the narrow form feels more substantial than it looks, at about 22 g per piece.
- Individual surface: small differences in tone and pattern are normal. Turn a piece in the light and the finish changes subtly with the angle.
Why the surface looks different
Orii is known for colouring copper and brass without hiding the character of the metal. The process produces mottling, tonal shifts and small variations rather than a perfectly uniform industrial coating. Those differences are part of the object, not defects.
At the table
Use one at each place setting for a knife and fork, or combine it with chopsticks and a spoon. The five finishes let you create a mixed table without changing the shape or scale of the object.

Beautiful teapot from Kogu. I saw this one while I was in Japan and fell in love with the design. The material is beautiful and the size is perfect. Also the packaging was lovely and shipping was very fast.
To be honest, I bought the case solely because it protects the nippers and fits them perfectly; I didn't bother looking for a different $5 option that would offer the same fit. Unlike the nippers—which are simply flawless—the case is vastly overpriced; the cost of three cases equals the price of one pair of nippers. Yet, the nippers represent sheer perfection and embody a huge amount of time and effort, whereas the case is just a piece of leather stitched together.
