Yes. Damascus steel can rust or corrode depending on the steels used, the surface finish and the environment. “Damascus” describes the layered construction and visible pattern; it does not automatically mean that the material is rust-proof or stainless.

Is Damascus steel rust-proof?
No. Damascus steel is not one single steel grade. It can be made from different combinations of steels, so corrosion resistance depends on the materials used.
Stainless steels gain their corrosion resistance from chromium and the protective passive layer that forms on the surface. Even stainless steel is corrosion-resistant rather than absolutely immune to corrosion.
That is why the word “Damascus” by itself does not tell you whether a particular object is stainless or how corrosion-resistant it will be.
Can the SUWADA Damascus folding knife rust?
The safest answer is to treat the uncoated Damascus-steel handle as moisture-sensitive. SUWADA's current care guidance says to keep the steel handle clean and dry.
SUWADA does not publish the exact composition of every steel layer in this handle, so we do not assign it a specific corrosion-resistance rating or describe it as rust-proof.
The blade is different: it is a separate mirror-polished Japanese cobalt stainless-steel component. The blade itself is not Damascus steel.
How do you prevent rust on a Damascus-steel handle?

- Do not leave the handle exposed to prolonged moisture.
- Do not put the knife in a dishwasher.
- Store the knife only when it is clean and dry.

Dry it thoroughly as soon as practical. A small amount of incidental moisture is different from leaving the knife damp or soaking it.

Should you polish rust off Damascus steel yourself?
