How Often Should You Disinfect Nail Clippers?

There is not one disinfection interval for every situation. For routine personal nail care, the American Academy of Dermatology says to disinfect nail clippers and nail scissors monthly. In its nail-fungus prevention guidance, however, the AAD recommends disinfecting nail clippers after each use.
The difference makes sense: a personal tool used on healthy nails is a different hygiene situation from a tool that may contact fungal infection or be used by more than one person.
Routine personal use: monthly is an established baseline
In its general nail-trimming guidance, the AAD recommends monthly disinfection of nail clippers and nail scissors. It describes cleaning the tools and then using 70–90% isopropyl alcohol as part of the process.
That monthly interval applies to ordinary personal grooming. It should not be interpreted as permission to leave visible debris or moisture on the tool between sessions.
Fungal-infection prevention: disinfect after each use
In separate guidance focused specifically on preventing nail fungus, the AAD recommends disinfecting clippers after every use. Mayo Clinic likewise advises disinfecting nail clippers after each use as part of nail-fungus prevention.
If a tool has been used on a nail with suspected or confirmed fungal infection, do not use it on other nails or another person without appropriate cleaning and disinfection.
What if more than one person uses the same clippers?
The simplest answer is: avoid sharing nail-grooming tools when possible. AAD guidance explicitly advises never sharing nail clippers because the fungi that cause nail fungus can spread through contaminated tools.
If sharing cannot be avoided, the tool should be cleaned and disinfected before it is used by another person. A salon or professional setting may also be subject to local hygiene rules that go beyond household guidance.
Does the disinfectant matter?
Yes. Medical guidance and material compatibility are two different questions.
AAD's nail-fungus guidance gives specific disinfection methods for generic nail clippers, including 70% rubbing alcohol for routine situations and a diluted bleach solution when fungus, a wart or another infection is present.
However, chloride-containing products such as bleach can attack the passive layer of some stainless steels. The British Stainless Steel Association notes that hypochlorite and chloride solutions can cause pitting or other localized corrosion. SUWADA also notes that its high-carbon cutlery stainless is more corrosion-sensitive than ordinary flatware stainless steel.
For a premium, coated, high-carbon or manufacturer-serviceable tool, do not assume that a generic bleach method is compatible with the material. Follow the maker's instructions or ask the manufacturer if infection-level disinfection is required.
What is the practical routine?
- After normal use: remove debris, keep the tool clean and dry.
- Routine personal care: use the AAD monthly-disinfection baseline.
- Fungal-infection prevention: disinfect after each use.
- Shared tools: preferably do not share; if used by another person, clean and disinfect before reuse.
