What Is a Tamagoyaki Pan?
Sep 27, 2026
A tamagoyaki pan is a square or rectangular frying pan made specifically for Japanese rolled omelettes. The straight sides make it easier to build repeated thin layers and roll them into a neat rectangular omelette.
Why is a tamagoyaki pan rectangular?
Kikkoman explains that the rectangular shape helps form the multiple layers of a rolled omelette. The exact shape varies in Japan: pans may be more square or more rectangular depending on region and style.
What is tamagoyaki?
Tamagoyaki is beaten, seasoned egg cooked in thin layers and rolled repeatedly until it forms a thicker omelette. It is common in bento and is also used in sushi.
Do you need a special pan?
No. Kikkoman explicitly notes that tamagoyaki can also be made in a standard frying pan. A dedicated tamagoyaki pan mainly makes the rectangular layered form easier to create.
