Can You Fix a Broken Japanese Knife Tip?
Sep 27, 2026
Yes, many broken Japanese knife tips can be repaired. The repair usually reshapes the blade into a new point rather than adding material back.
Small tip breaks
A few millimetres can often be corrected by grinding from the spine, the edge or a controlled combination of both.
Why not grind only one side?
Removing too much from only the edge can raise the tip dramatically; removing too much from the spine can change the blade's visual line. Good repair balances both.
Large breaks
The bigger the missing section, the more the profile, blade height and cutting behaviour may change after repair.
Can you do it at home?
Very small damage can be repaired by an experienced sharpener with appropriate coarse stones or abrasives. Heat-producing power tools can damage heat treatment if used poorly.
What if the crack extends beyond the visible break?
Stop using the knife and have it assessed. A crack is different from a simple chipped tip.
When is professional repair worthwhile?
For expensive knives, large breaks, single-bevel geometry, polished finishes or any repair that requires major reshaping.
