SLD Steel Guide

SLD is a Japanese cold-work tool-steel family developed by the company now known as Proterial and adopted by some kitchen-knife makers for hard, wear-resistant blades. It was not originally designed only for kitchen knives.

What does SLD mean?

Proterial’s historical explanation says SLD stands for “Stainless Like Die,” a name referring to corrosion resistance that was better than comparable die steels of its era.

Is SLD stainless?

It is safer to think of SLD as a corrosion-resistant tool steel rather than ordinary kitchen stainless steel. Knife sellers often call it semi-stainless, but it can still stain or rust depending on finish, heat treatment, use and care.

Why use it in a kitchen knife?

Cold-work tool steels are designed around hardness and wear resistance. In a well-made kitchen knife, SLD can provide strong edge retention while reducing some of the reactivity associated with simple carbon steels.

Is SLD hard to sharpen?

It can take longer than simple carbon steel because of its wear resistance, but normal quality synthetic whetstones can sharpen it. Do not choose the sharpening method from the steel label alone: edge damage and geometry matter.

Does an SLD knife need oil?

For ordinary daily use, careful washing and immediate drying are the main habits. For long-term storage or humid conditions, follow the maker’s care instructions; a very thin food-safe blade oil can be useful on steels that are not fully stainless.

Is SLD better than VG10?

There is no universal winner. VG10 is a stainless blade steel; SLD is a tool steel with a different balance of wear resistance and corrosion behaviour. The finished knife matters more than the label alone.

Can a Whetstone Damage a Japanese Knife?

Yes, a whetstone can damage a knife if used incorrectly: the wrong angle, excessive pressure, an unnecessarily coarse stone, poor single-bevel technique or uneven grinding can remove too much steel or distort the edge.

What Grit Do You Need for a Very Dull Knife?

A very dull knife may need a coarse stone if a medium stone would take too long to rebuild the apex. For heavy dullness without major damage, start only as coarse as necessary, then refine on a medium stone.
