How to Remove a Hangnail Safely
Sep 24, 2026
Do not pull, bite or tear off a hangnail. Wash your hands, soften the skin in warm water for a few minutes, then use a clean nail clipper or cuticle cutter to trim only the loose flap as close to its base as you can without cutting healthy skin.
What is a hangnail?
A hangnail is not part of the nail plate. It is a small piece of dry or damaged skin that has lifted beside the nail.
Cleveland Clinic notes that hangnails often develop from dry skin, frequent hand washing, harsh soaps, picking at the nail area, wet work or cold weather.
Why should you not pull it off?
Pulling can tear the loose flap into living skin, causing bleeding, pain and a larger opening for bacteria to enter.
Mayo Clinic specifically advises clipping hangnails rather than pulling them because pulling can remove living tissue.
Step 1: Wash your hands
Start with clean hands so you are not introducing extra dirt or germs into an already irritated area.
Step 2: Soften the hangnail
Soak the finger in warm water for a few minutes. This softens the stiff flap and makes it easier to trim without tugging.
Step 3: Trim only the loose flap
Use a clean nail clipper or cuticle nipper. Place only the detached skin between the cutting edges and make one controlled cut near its base.
Do not dig under the surrounding skin or continue cutting after the loose piece is gone.
Step 4: Moisturize
Apply hand cream or another simple moisturizer around the nail after drying. Keeping the skin flexible can reduce the dryness and cracking that contribute to future hangnails.
When should you get medical advice?
Seek medical advice if redness, swelling, warmth, increasing pain or pus develops, or if the area does not heal normally. Cleveland Clinic also recommends a lower threshold for medical advice in people with diabetes or conditions that increase bleeding risk.
Can a cuticle nipper be used?
Yes, for the loose hangnail itself. A short cutting edge can make the small flap easier to isolate. The same tool should not then be used to remove intact cuticle around the nail.
