About Suwada1926 – Japanese Craftsmanship in Europe
Suwada1926 is Suwada’s European operation, connecting the craftsmanship of Suwada Blacksmith Works in Sanjo, Japan, with customers across Europe. Based in Belgium, we support customers with Japanese-made nail nippers, kitchen and garden tools, incense, tableware and carefully selected craft objects.
Our role is simple: make exceptional Japanese tools easier to discover, buy and use in Europe, with local stock, European-time-zone customer service and practical support before and after purchase.
From Sanjo, Japan, to Europe
Suwada has been making cutting tools in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, since 1926. As more European customers discovered our nail nippers, bonsai tools and kitchen products, Suwada established its Belgian European operation in 2021.
The European business helps shorten the distance between the makers in Japan and the people who use their tools here. We hold stock in Europe, support customers locally and introduce craftspeople and objects that deserve a wider audience.
How We Work in Europe Today
Suwada1926 is an online-first European operation. Orders are fulfilled from Belgium and customer service is handled in European time zones, helping us provide quicker delivery, simpler returns and more useful support.
We do not operate a public showroom or local-pickup point. Our fulfillment location is operational rather than a retail shop. If you need help choosing a product, arranging a return or asking about a service, please contact us before travelling.
Suwada Blacksmith Works – Since 1926
Suwada Blacksmith Works is based in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, one of Japan’s best-known regions for cutlery and metalworking. The company began in 1926 when founder Shukusaburo Kobayashi made kuikiri, end-cutting pliers used by carpenters.
Over the following generations, Suwada developed specialist nail nippers, pruning and bonsai tools, kitchen tools and other precision objects. Today the company is led by third-generation president Tomoyuki Kobayashi.
Craftsmanship That Still Depends on Human Hands
Machines support production, but the decisive stages of a Suwada tool still depend on skilled people. Forging, grinding, joining, sharpening and finishing are guided by trained eyes and hands. That is why the feel, balance and cutting performance of the finished tool matter as much as its appearance.
Our principles are straightforward: precise function, honest materials, long life and purposeful design. A good tool should work beautifully, feel natural in the hand and be worth keeping.

Alongside Suwada’s own products, we curate selected Japanese and European objects that share the same values: strong craftsmanship, useful design and durability. This includes tools, homeware, incense and other objects that can become part of everyday rituals rather than disposable purchases.
Our European Team
Our European team brings experience from Japan, the United Kingdom and Belgium, including work in customer service, exports, retail, sharpening and Suwada’s Open Factory. That mix helps us explain not only what a product is, but how it is made, how to use it and how to care for it over time.
