An Iga bowl that makes its handmade surface part of the meal
This 21 cm bowl from Syunbougama combines an earthy clay body with an ash-glazed surface. It is intentionally less uniform than industrial tableware: colour, glaze flow, crazing and small changes in form are part of what makes each piece individual.
What you notice in the hand
- Earthy texture under the glaze: the surface moves between smoother glass-like areas and more tactile clay.
- Wide, shallow form: about 21.5 cm across and 5 cm high, giving food room to spread rather than sit in a deep bowl.
- Handmade variation: one bowl may show more glaze pooling, ash marks or tonal variation than another.
Why the surface looks this way
Iga ware is valued for the interaction between clay, glaze and firing rather than perfect repetition. Natural variation can create areas of different colour, texture and crazing. Those differences are expected in handmade pottery.
At the table
The 21 cm size works for composed dishes, vegetables, pasta, rice dishes or shared sides. Because the rim stays relatively low, the glaze remains visible around the food.

Beautiful teapot from Kogu. I saw this one while I was in Japan and fell in love with the design. The material is beautiful and the size is perfect. Also the packaging was lovely and shipping was very fast.
To be honest, I bought the case solely because it protects the nippers and fits them perfectly; I didn't bother looking for a different $5 option that would offer the same fit. Unlike the nippers—which are simply flawless—the case is vastly overpriced; the cost of three cases equals the price of one pair of nippers. Yet, the nippers represent sheer perfection and embody a huge amount of time and effort, whereas the case is just a piece of leather stitched together.
I spent a long time deciding whether to buy size S or L, so I ended up buying both.
