How Do You Maintain and Store a Whetstone?
Sep 27, 2026
Maintain a whetstone by keeping it clean, flat enough for accurate sharpening and stored according to its construction.

Rinse away swarf
After sharpening, remove loose steel and abrasive residue with clean water.
Flatten when needed
If the stone has developed a hollow or uneven wear, correct it with an appropriate flattening method.
Do not use household oil
A water stone is designed for water, not cooking oil or general-purpose lubricants.
Let the stone dry gently
Unless the stone is specifically designed for permanent immersion, allow it to dry away from strong heat and direct sunlight.
Avoid rapid drying
Radiators, ovens and strong sun can create unnecessary stress in the stone.
Store it where it cannot be dropped
Whetstones are brittle. Protect corners and surfaces from impact.
Do all stones store the same way?
No. Some stones tolerate soaking; others are splash-and-go. Follow the instructions for the actual stone.
