How to Use a Nail Nipper for the First Time

For your first use of a nail nipper, work slowly and cut only a small section of the free nail edge at a time. Position the jaws where you can clearly see them, squeeze the handles steadily, then move along the nail rather than trying to remove the entire edge in one cut.
The open-jaw mechanism feels different from a lever clipper, but the basic aim is the same: control the line of cut without catching the surrounding skin.
1. Learn how the jaws open and close before touching the nail
Hold the nipper and squeeze the handles a few times in the air. Notice how the spring reopens the tool and where the two cutting edges meet.
Do not touch or test the sharpness of the edge with a fingertip.
2. Use good light and a stable hand position
Rest the hand or foot so you are not holding it in mid-air. Good visibility matters more with an open-jaw tool because you can position the cutting edge very precisely.
3. Place only the free nail edge between the jaws
Do not push the nipper deep under the nail. Start at the free edge—the part that has grown beyond the attached nail bed—and position only as much nail as you can cut comfortably.
4. Take small controlled cuts
Close the handles steadily, then release and reposition. On a thick nail, several small cuts are safer and more controllable than one large bite.
SUWADA specifically advises cutting thickened nails bit by bit because a single large cut can crack the nail or damage the blade edge.
5. Follow the correct shape for fingers and toes
For fingernails, AAD recommends cutting almost straight across and slightly rounding the corners with a file. For toenails, cut straight across and avoid cutting the corners away.

Do you need to file after using a nipper?
Only if the finished edge has a rough point or you want to refine the shape. A file is not automatically required after every clean cut.

When should you stop?
