Does Shirogami Steel Rust?
Sep 27, 2026
Yes. Shirogami can rust readily if it is left wet. It is a high-purity carbon steel with very little chromium, so it does not have stainless-level corrosion resistance.

What causes rust?
Moisture, salt, acids and humid storage all accelerate corrosion. Leaving food residue on the blade makes the risk higher.
Is patina bad?
No. Grey, blue and dark surface colours can be normal patina. Active rust is usually orange, rough or powdery.
How should you care for it?
Wash after use, dry immediately and store the blade dry. Do not leave it in a damp towel, wet sink or sheath.
Do you need oil?
Not necessarily for a knife used every day and dried carefully. A very thin layer of food-safe protective oil is useful for long storage or humid environments.
What if rust appears?
Light surface rust can often be removed carefully with a rust eraser or mild abrasive. Deep corrosion or pitting may need specialist work.
