Is SLD Stainless or Semi-Stainless?

In kitchen-knife use, SLD is best treated as semi-stainless rather than fully stainless. It contains about 12% chromium, but that does not make its corrosion behaviour identical to conventional stainless cutlery steels.

Why does 12% chromium not settle the question?

Steel behaviour depends on the full composition and microstructure, including how much chromium is tied up in carbides rather than available for corrosion resistance.

Can SLD rust?

Yes. It is much more corrosion resistant than simple carbon steel, but moisture, salt and acidic residue can still cause staining or rust.

Does it develop patina?

Some SLD blades can darken or stain with use, though generally less readily than reactive carbon steels.

How should you care for it?

Wash and dry it promptly. There is no need to treat it as if a drop of water will immediately damage it, but do not leave it wet for long periods.

Why is “semi-stainless” useful?

It sets realistic expectations: easier corrosion care than carbon steel, but not complete immunity from rust.

When Does a Japanese Knife Need Professional Repair?

Professional repair is worth considering for deep chips, broken tips, major thinning, distorted single-bevel geometry, deep rust, loose handles or damage that would require heavy material removal.

Can You Fix a Broken Japanese Knife Tip?

Often yes. A small broken tip can usually be reshaped by grinding the spine and edge into a new point, but larger breaks remove more steel and can change blade profile, balance and usefulness.
