How to Use a Cuticle Pusher Safely

The safest dermatology advice is to leave intact cuticles alone. If you choose to use a cuticle pusher for manicure preparation, use it only gently after the area has been softened by a bath, shower or brief warm-water soak.

Why should pushing be gentle?

The skin and cuticle at the base of the nail form a protective seal. Forceful pushing can injure that seal and make it easier for bacteria or fungi to enter.

AAD specifically advises against forcefully pushing cuticles back.

1. Soften the area

Use the pusher after a bath or shower, or after a brief warm-water soak. Softer tissue requires less force and is less likely to tear.

2. Use a shallow angle

Keep the working end almost parallel with the nail plate. The goal is not to dig downward under the nail fold.

Move slowly and stop when you meet clear resistance.

3. Do not scrape the living nail fold

Do not use the tool to separate or lift the skin at the base of the nail. If the area becomes painful, red or starts to bleed, stop.

4. Remove only what is already loose

After gentle preparation, a soft cloth can remove material that has already loosened from the nail plate. There is no need to aggressively scrape the surface.

Metal or wooden pusher?

The main safety difference is not the material but the amount of pressure and control. A rigid metal pusher can transmit more force and should be used carefully. A wooden orangewood stick is less rigid and disposable, but it can still damage the nail fold if used forcefully.

Whichever tool you use, do not turn “pushing back” into lifting, digging or scraping under living skin.

How often should you push cuticles back?

There is no health requirement to do it on a schedule. Dermatologists generally recommend leaving cuticles alone, so pushing should not become a routine task simply because a calendar says it is time.
