SUWADA 100th Anniversary Masterpiece — Lignum Vitae
Dense, richly coloured and naturally distinctive, the Lignum Vitae Masterpiece Nail Nipper was created as a limited model for SUWADA's 100th anniversary.
The name lignum vitae comes from Latin for “wood of life.” The timber is known for its exceptional density and hardness, together with naturally occurring oils that give the material a smooth, substantial character in the hand.
SUWADA pairs this unusual wood with its hand-finished stainless-steel cutting head, creating a Masterpiece that feels both technical and organic.
A handle that changes with time
Lignum Vitae can show greenish-brown tones that deepen as the surface is handled and ages. The grain and colour differ from piece to piece, so each nipper develops its own visual identity.
Its density gives the handles a reassuringly solid feel, while the Masterpiece construction keeps the complete tool at approximately 65 g — still notably lighter than a conventional all-steel Classic L.
The natural oils and highly dense grain are part of what has made Lignum Vitae such an unusual working material historically; here, they give the handle a tactile presence quite unlike the lighter woods in the Masterpiece collection.
SUWADA cutting performance at the centre
The rare handle material does not replace the cutting function. The tool uses curved blades with an approximately 14 mm cutting edge and a maximum opening of around 20 mm.
The cutting head is made from stainless cutlery steel and finished with a hairline surface. Each tool is finished by hand, so small differences in dimensions and weight are normal.
Made for a centenary, made to be used
This anniversary model sits at the intersection of collectible material and everyday utility. It can be appreciated as a limited SUWADA object, but it is first and foremost a precision nail nipper designed to be held, used and maintained for years.

Natural material, individual character
Colour, grain and tone vary naturally between pieces. The exact handle received will therefore differ from the photographs. With handling and age, the greenish-brown appearance may deepen further, giving the tool an increasingly personal character.
Care
Do not soak the tool or place it in a dishwasher. Wipe the cutting head after use and allow the tool to dry completely before storage. Avoid prolonged moisture, strong heat and rapid changes in temperature or humidity.

Beautiful teapot from Kogu. I saw this one while I was in Japan and fell in love with the design. The material is beautiful and the size is perfect. Also the packaging was lovely and shipping was very fast.
To be honest, I bought the case solely because it protects the nippers and fits them perfectly; I didn't bother looking for a different $5 option that would offer the same fit. Unlike the nippers—which are simply flawless—the case is vastly overpriced; the cost of three cases equals the price of one pair of nippers. Yet, the nippers represent sheer perfection and embody a huge amount of time and effort, whereas the case is just a piece of leather stitched together.
I spent a long time deciding whether to buy size S or L, so I ended up buying both.
