A rare material, a century of SUWADA, and a tool made to outlast trends.
The Jindai Keyaki Masterpiece Nail Nipper was revived for SUWADA's 100th anniversary using an exceptionally scarce piece of Japanese zelkova. This wood was buried by natural events in the middle basin of the Agano River roughly 1,600 years ago and was accidentally excavated around half a century ago.
Its long time underground transformed the appearance of the wood into deep, subdued tones that ordinary freshly cut zelkova cannot reproduce. Every handle carries a different grain and expression, making each piece visibly individual.
A material measured in centuries
Jindai wood refers to timber that remained buried underground for a very long period before being recovered. In this case, SUWADA uses rare Jindai Keyaki — ancient Japanese zelkova — shaped into substantial handles and carefully joined to the stainless-steel cutting head.
The result feels very different from a conventional all-steel nipper. The wooden handles add volume in the palm while keeping the tool relatively light at approximately 62 g.
Because the available material is exceptionally limited, this is not a model that can be produced continuously in ordinary quantities.
Masterpiece cutting geometry
The cutting head remains recognisably SUWADA: curved blades, hand-finished alignment and a cutting edge approximately 14 mm long. The maximum blade opening is approximately 20 mm.
The cutting head is made from stainless cutlery steel and finished with SUWADA's hairline treatment. The natural-wood handles change the feel and character of the tool without changing its purpose: precise, controlled nail trimming.
A centenary object intended to be used
This is collectible because of the material and anniversary context, but it remains a functional SUWADA nail nipper. Its value lies in that combination — rare wood with a long history, contemporary Japanese metalworking, and a tool designed for regular use rather than display alone.

Natural material, individual grain
Every Jindai Keyaki handle is different. Grain, colour, tone and small natural variations will not exactly match the photographs. Those differences are inherent to the recovered wood and form part of the character of each piece.
Care
Do not soak the tool or place it in a dishwasher. Wipe the cutting head after use and keep both steel and wood dry before storage. Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, strong heat and rapid changes in temperature or humidity.
