Are Secateur Springs Universal? How to Find the Correct Replacement

Quick answer: no. Secateur springs are not universally interchangeable, even when two springs look very similar. Some manufacturers use one spring across several tools, while others use different springs for different sizes, models or production generations. The safest way to replace a spring is to identify the exact secateur model first and then use a verified compatibility list.
That is usually more reliable than buying a spring simply because its length looks approximately right.
Why aren't secateur springs universal?
The spring between the handles has a simple job: it helps reopen the secateurs after each cut. But the spring's dimensions, shape and the way it sits in the tool are not standardised across every manufacturer.
Replacement springs are commonly matched to specific tool models, and sometimes to a particular size or production version. That is why the model number should be checked before ordering.
So a spring can be common to several models without being universally compatible.
How do I find the correct replacement spring?
1. Find the model number
Look for a model code stamped, engraved or printed on the secateurs. For SUWADA tools, this might be something such as S-13W, S-14, S-19, S-25, S-30, S-31 or SH-1.
That code is much more useful than estimating the spring size from a photograph.
2. Check the compatibility list
Do not assume two secateurs take the same spring simply because they are roughly the same length. Check which spring the manufacturer or specialist retailer specifically lists for that model.
If the model is unclear, a clear photograph of the complete tool is generally more useful than ordering several approximate springs and hoping one fits.
Which spring fits SUWADA secateurs?
Our current SUWADA replacement springs are supplied in two sizes: Large and Small.

If your SUWADA model is not on this list, do not simply choose whichever spring looks closest. For example, our current compatibility list does not include the S-S1 Stainless Steel Secateurs, so that model should be verified before either spring is ordered.
Can I use a generic or "universal" secateur spring?
Possibly, but the word universal should not be treated as a guarantee of fit.
Aftermarket springs can work when their dimensions, tension and mounting points match the tool. The problem is that a similar-looking spring does not prove those details are the same. Where an original or verified compatible part is available, it removes most of the guesswork.
When does a secateur spring need replacing?
A spring is worth replacing when it has broken, been lost, become permanently deformed or stopped reopening the handles reliably.
But a secateur that feels stiff does not automatically have a bad spring. Sap, dirt or corrosion around the pivot can also make a tool reluctant to open and close. Before replacing parts unnecessarily, clean the tool and make sure the pivot is moving freely.
